Mt Hawthorn chef wins 12 medals at Australian Food Awards

A PERTH foodie has scooped 12 medals at the Australian Food Awards, with one of her creations taking gold with a perfect score.

Mt Hawthorn resident Latasha Menon, who ran Latasha’s Kitchen on Leederville’s Newcastle Street between 2003 and 2013, scored three silver and eight bronze for her range of Indian and South-east Asian-inspired pastes, sauces and relishes.

Topping that, her cherry chocolate dessert sauce helped her win gold in the ‘dressing and sauces’ class, and was rated a perfect 100 score.

The judges commented on her balance of quality ingredients, saying: “Sensational product. Perfect.”

The Australian Food Awards, held by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria, are the leading national food awards and offer producers opportunities to expand their brands overseas.

Ms Menon, who travels to Sydney every month to cook new batches of her 31 products, said it was the first time she had entered a major competition.

“When I went to a few of the trade shows in New South Wales, I noticed buyers placed a huge significance on medals you’ve won,” she said.

“I decided to enter to have a base view of where my products might fit in.”

Ms Menon said her gold medal-winning sauce was great in meringues, pavlovas, brownies, sponge cakes, with ice cream and fruit skewers.
